Chapter thirty nine


"Calli" he murmured sleepily as he woke up a couple of mornings later. He turned over and reached for her, frowning as he found her side of the bed empty "Calli?"

He opened his eyes and lay still for a moment listening to the sounds in her apartment, quickly he got out of bed as he heard the sound of retching coming from her bathroom and rapped lightly on the door. "Callan honey?"

"I'll be out in a minute Dave" she managed before heaving again and vomiting into the toilet.

"Baby?" he tried the handle of the door and cursed softly as he found it locked. "Calli can you open the door for me?"

"I'm okay just give me a minute or two."

"Okay" he went back and sat on her bed, listening to the sound of her vomiting desperately wanting to go in and hold her and make sure that she was okay. Wondering what had bought on the sudden sickness he sighed worriedly, she'd been fine a couple of hours before after they'd made love. Suddenly the conversation he'd had with Jus came into his mind, "Keep an eye on her Dave, make sure she's not drinking."

"No she can't be, she's been doing so well, she wouldn't not now, anyway she's been with me the whole time.

"No surely he'd know if she was drinking he knew the signs, knew all the ways to cover it to hide it.

"She's going to go through a difficult patch....She's good at hiding it.".

Maybe whilst he'd been sleeping, maybe then He crossed over to her wardrobe and guiltily rummaged through, searching for bottles anything , drawing a blank he quickly went through the drawers of her unit, all the time listening to the sounds coming from her bathroom, hearing the sound of the toilet flush again and the tap being turned on he quickly checked the last drawer closed it silently and went back over to the bathroom.

"Baby are you okay?" he asked as the door opened slowly.

"No, Dave can you turn the lights out please." she whispered

"Sweetheart?"

"I've got a migrane, the lights hurting my eyes... I need to lie down"

"Migrane right" quickly he crossed to the lamp on her desk and turned if off before helping her over to the bed "Do you want me to get you anything for it?"

"No I've took some of my meds, I just need to lie down until it goes away again"

"Okay" he lay down beside her and brushed her hair away from her face gently, feeling guilty about thinking that she'd been drinking. "Just let me know if you need anything."

"I just need to rest David" she whispered “It'll be gone tomorrow.”

"Okay I'll stay with you for a while."


Twenty minutes later the sound of loud music and general noise filled the apartment.

"No" she moaned opening her eyes

"I'll go and sort it" he soothed kissing her cheek.

"No it's okay they'll go out in a bit they're just getting ready for uni thats all."

"It's okay I'll ask them to turn it down."

"Dave no, it'll stop in a bit, anyway they don't know about us do they? The last thing I need right now is them seeing you here and questioning me, please"

"Okay, if you want me t leave it I will but listen you can't stay here, do you think you're up to coming back to mine, you can have all the peace and quiet you need there."

"No it's okay I'm fine here."

"No arguments Calli, you're coming back home with me, you can sleep and I can check on you whilst I'm in the studio, you get dressed and I'll pack some of your stuff.”

Quickly he pulled track pants and a hoodie from the wardrobe and found clean underwear in one of her drawers “Here put these on sweetheart and I'll grab the rest of your stuff, need anything else from the bathroom?”

“No just my migrane medication and my toothbrush Dave.”

“Okay, he grabbed her case from top of the wardrobe and placed it back onto the bed before sorting out clothes for the following couple of days. “What?” he asked as he saw her managing to smile

“The size of that case, I'm not moving in with you, you know?”

“I know, I couldn't find anything else to use” he hunted through one of the drawers “Baby do you have any pj's or anything like that.”

“No" she shook her head

“Okay I'll find something of mine for you to wear” he smiled taking her robe from the back of the door and adding it to the pile, “Need anything else?”

“Just my rucksack and handbag” she stood up to put her tracks pants on and made dash for the bathroom just about making it before she vomited again. Leaving the packing he followed her to the bathroom and knelt beside her in the dimly lit room, holding her hair back from her face as she retched again.

“Are you always like this sweetheart?” he asked handing her a tissue.

“Sometimes I can be, it's not been this bad for a while though.”

"Poor baby you're really suffering aren't you."

“Could you get me some water please.”

“Yeah” he filled the glass on the shelf with water. “Here you are sweetheart”

She took a sip and rinsed her mouth out before taking a drink and grimacing as she swallowed “Ergh I hate bathroom water, it always tastes awful.”

“I can't say I've ever noticed” he chuckled softly looking at the expression on her face “Waters, water isn't it?”

“No, bathroom water always tastes evil”

“Do you think you're ready up to going now?”

“Mmm yes” Callan gave him a small nod “ I think so I'll just put my bottoms and trainers on and we'll go, can you write Nathe a note for me, telling him I'm at yours”

“Okay,” he glanced at her as she winced in pain "What is it baby."

"The lights hurting my eyes that's all."

“sweetheart have you got any sunglasses? It might be an idea to wear them when we go outside try and cut down on some of that light."

"Somewhere I think they're in my rucksack."

"Okay you just sit still and I'll find them for you"

"Okay you know you don't have to do this don't you, I can just stay here and sleep."

"What and worry about you all day on your own, no you're coming to mine where I can look after you properly."


“Dad” Jake shouted as he came into Dave's apartment “Dad are you in?”

“Shush” he placed his fingers against his lips as he closed the door to his room “I'm here, keep it down huh?”

“Yeah sorry" he smiled coming down the hallway towards him "Dad?” he glanced from Dave to the closed door and back again, “Hey did Ella come home early or something, I can't wait to see her."


“No, it's not Ella, Callans here.”

“Cal's here?”

Dave grinned at the slight flush that came to Jakes cheeks “She's got a migraine and it's way too noisy for her at her apartment so she's staying here until it passes okay.”

“Oh right” he looked at Dave puzzled before glancing at his watch.

“I crashed at her place” Dave began to explain as he saw what Jake was thinking “We were watching a dvd and I guess we both fell asleep on her sofa.”

“Oh right, is she okay Dad?”

“She will be now she's asleep, she just needs to rest, so if you can try not to make too much noise, I'd be grateful, So did you have a good night then?” he grinned at his son now looking at his own watch and raising an eyebrow, “I take it you did?”

“Yeah it was great, it's a shame Cal couldn't make it though, she'd have loved it, the band was great.”

“Yeah I know whats she like about her music, so have you been at the club all this time?”

“No a gang of us went and had breakfast and just hung out for a bit, it was a shame Cali didn't come with us, a couple of the guys from the other night were there too.”

“Yeah i know although it's probably a good thing now this might have come on whilst she was out with you. Fancy a coffee before you turn in and you can tell me all about it”

“Yes that would be good Dad, oh I was wondering if you fancied working on some stuff up in the studio this afternoon, I could do with a little help with one of the sequences I'm working on”

“Yeah sure,okay I want to be in to check on Calli anyway and I have some work I need to do myself up there, so yes that would be good.”
